Holy Land Pictures 25th -31st October 2019

  • General
  • Most of the photos are of the places we visited, but here are a handful of other things we saw in Israel.
  • 25 October
  • After a punishingly short night's sleep, we spent the day in and around Bethlehem - at the site of
the Nativity and in Shepherd's Fields.
  • 26 October
  • One of the busiest days - we went to the Mount of Olives, then over to the Ascension Dome.
We saw the place where Jesus had taught his apostles to pray, and also saw the point where Jesus wept over Jerusalem.
We then moved onto the Garden of Gethsemane, but it was absolutely packed with tourists (and street traders and hustlers,
more like - 'one rosary $2; 6 rosary just $10'). We went inside the Church dedicated to Gethsemane, and saw the Rock of Agony.
In the afternoon we went to Ein Karim, the birthplace of John the Baptist; the Visitation Shrine
(where Mary visited Elizabeth) and the Basilica of St John the Baptist.
  • 27 October
  • Sunday, and another very full day, where we covered Old Jerusalem, the pool of Bethesda and St Anne's Church (Our lady's birthplace).
Then to the Via Dolorosa, which is in the heart of the old town. It is full of shops with their wares displayed along the street.
Giving the tendency of some of our group to become distracted by the goods on offer, we bolted along the Via Dolorosa at breakneck speed.
We got to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and had Mass there then saw the base of Mount Calvary; the Tomb of the Resurrection
and then after lunch went to Dormition Abbey - the place where Mary is said to have died and from there onto the Room of the Last Supper.
  • 28 October
  • It is now Monday, and the pace of the trip has eased up somewhat. We went to Caiphas' house, then to Bethany - to the home of Lazaus,
Martha and Mary. After that we went to Jericho to see the Mount of Temptation and Zaccheus' sycamore tree
(not sure it's the original ...!) and finally to the Dead Sea with the $10 pint! The Dead Sea is 400 metres below sea level.
  • 29 October
  • An almost leisurely day, since we left the Bethlehem base and checked into the hotel at Nazareth. We went first to Cana where
we visited the Church of the Wedding, where married couples could renew their marriage vows if they chose, then onwards to Nazareth,
to the Church of the Annunciation. Finally on to Mary's Well.
  • 30 October
  • A fairly busy day, but it seemed much less frantic. We went to the Yardenit baptismal site on the River Jordan
(where people could renew their Baptismal vows), then on to the Mount of Beatitudes, where the Sermon on the Mount took place.
We went further round Galilee, where Jesus appeared to his Apostles after the resurrection and to the
Church of the Feeding of the 5,000. We had a boat trip on the Sea of Galilee, which is 200 metres below sea level and finally
onto Capernaum, to see Peter's house and the synagogue where Jesus went to pray.
  • 31 October
  • Our last day, and just one place to visit before heading to the airport - Mount Tabor - the place of the Transfiguration.
